National company HRO 500 replaced sawtooth detector, diode and coupling capacitor
Update from THE FUTURE. Wed Aug 28th.
I tuned the Two IF cans and the MIXER can on the SYNTH for best LOCK on band #3
Meaning I would turn the synth tune one way until it unlocked. Then the other way to lock.
Then further until it unlocked.
Then I fiddled with the Mixer and the two IF cans to get the WIDEST lock possible spanning the desired frequency. This seems to be the BEST way to turn the mixer and the two IF cans
After this and hours later I fired up the HRO 500 and could LOCK on all bands 1 to 5.
Although not accurately on bands 1 and 2.
indeed I have all of the frequency indicator drum OUT to change the light bulbs STILL!

National company HRO 500 replaced germanium diode with silicon in synthesizer detector, good locking
Просмотров 262 часа назад
Putting in matched silicon diodes improved lock a bit. BUT I just ordered a batch of 100 germanium diodes from the Amazon Chinese Communists. So when those come in I will install them into the sync detector and see if there is ever bettah lock.
National company HRO 500 how adjust VFO top and bottom ranges for gross linearity after VFO changes
Просмотров 344 часа назад
Why was I adjusting VFO linearity you ask? The HRO is good down to 250 cycles with the dial markings. Well I was mucking with the VFO. I removed the cover of the VFO to put a crease in the cover to allow passage of the AGC knob / rod. I had tried to put in an aluminum switch rod. Long story and a MISTAKE. Leave the fiberglass rod alone - if the rod is still intact. DO NOT remove the copper cove...
National HRO 500 Maybe changing the function switch fiber glass rod to aluminum was a BAD idea?
Просмотров 397 часов назад
Seems the switch takes a lot of stress with the aluminum solid rod. And I BROKE the receiver doing this - no reception now. Not sure what I broke but I had the VFO cover off so... That is probably what I broke? Notes from THE FUTURE. Do not take off the copper VFO cover. Some mastermind technician at Natinoal Company who is probably DEAD by now was able to put the cover on the VFO and have it N...

National HRO 500 replacing fiberglass function rod with aluminum function rod for the function sw
Просмотров 337 часов назад
Tale of TWO Rods. Hint (from the future). Do not bother replacing the fiber glass rod. If it is working - leave it alone. Probably not woth the 3 hours and multiple grinding and hacking sessions to try to pull off the switch from fiberglass rod to aluminum rod. The aluminum rod has NO give and this seems to stress out the function switch really badly. The design of this situation is not ideal f...
National HRO 500 fix the string drive from the band switch to harmonic generator for band change
Просмотров 569 часов назад
Nothing worse than trying to string one of these dial strings for the first time in years and years. Luckily the diagram was good. The synth harmonic generator does not track the band switch well so there was some error in this stringing situation.
National HRO 500 how to replace two lightbulbs in a turret and Lock unlock indicator bulb
Просмотров 449 часов назад
(Notes from the future). I ordered the special LOCK / Unlock light from eBay. I ordered 12 volt LED lamps from Amazon / China. Weeks to get these. So we wait. With some patience you can change the light bulbs inside of the rotating Synth cylinder and change the light for the red pointer in front. And OH whilst you are at it change the lamp bulb for the PHASE UNLOCK indicator too. That one is a ...

How many HOURS into fixing this receiver now? One guy on a blog said he had 100 hours into fixing his HRO 500? I am sure I have exceeded 100 hours by now. Easy. www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=343326 I am trying to get this receiver to a state of "normalacy" Meaning - it operates closely to how it worked when new. National radio HRO 500 bands three and four calibrated and working demo

National company HRO 500 bands three and four calibrated and mostly dependable for using now
Просмотров 3914 часов назад
So I was able to finally calibrate band #4. The previous owner had broken a hex slug in an IF looking can which was the "L" part of the LC circuit for band #4. Was able to get a new slug from an "HRO 500 junkbox" that I paid $79 for on eBay. With that new slug I was able to calibrate band #4. Band #4 also had isues with the 2nd wafer back. So I cleaned that wafer up for the third time. The Synt...

National Company HRO 500 Receiver Demo on bands 3 & 4 after Spectrum Harmonic Generator repair
Просмотров 5416 часов назад
The spectrum Harmonic Generator was causing a lot of instability in the ability to hold Sync lock. With the HF capacitor being microphonic and changing frequency when the receiver is tapped I had thought this was the total reason for synch lock to go out when the receiver had even the slightest tap on the side or the tuning knob was rotated. I had not considered whatsoever Spectrum Harmonic Gen...

The reason for using the fibreglass rod was to avoid having metal interfere with tuned circuits. Anyone who's done an alignment on RF circuits would know that. Another reason, which might not apply here, is high voltage.

How far down should it go

    • @moviestudioland
      @moviestudioland 7 дней назад

You should probably go as far down as you can, but if you encounter stiff resistance, you don’t wanna force anything and break something so I would go down as far as you can until it tends to give up it has resistance that pull out and then see if you have water that’ll flow down take a look at the video and even see that we had lots of water going down there really briskly so you wanna go down enough to remove the clog

Not knowing a lot about the workings of a radio, to restore it, I just shotgun most of it. And have discovered the best way to do this is to have another unmolested or just a working rig of the same model next to me to be my guide together with a schematic drawing.

You might want to dress your wheel diameter smaller to fit the job sometimes. and run it a bit faster. Good work. There are all kinds of cutters adapter to use with a dremal to be creative, carbide cutters/tooling are the way to go for most applications. But your cut off wheel was a good choice in this application. I'm a machinist toolmaker and I've used this tool many of times so. . . Blessings.
