The reason for using the fibreglass rod was to avoid having metal interfere with tuned circuits. Anyone who's done an alignment on RF circuits would know that. Another reason, which might not apply here, is high voltage.

Not knowing a lot about the workings of a radio, to restore it, I just shotgun most of it. And have discovered the best way to do this is to have another unmolested or just a working rig of the same model next to me to be my guide together with a schematic drawing.

You might want to dress your wheel diameter smaller to fit the job sometimes. and run it a bit faster. Good work. There are all kinds of cutters adapter to use with a dremal to be creative, carbide cutters/tooling are the way to go for most applications. But your cut off wheel was a good choice in this application. I'm a machinist toolmaker and I've used this tool many of times so. . . Blessings.

Pull the shaft out of the radio from the front, if possible; take photos of the wiring to the switch; remove wires and remove the wafer affected. Take photos of the wafer (both sides) Someone may have the correct wafer; I can check my stash.

That radio just won't quit, when you spin that huge dial looks like your doing the combination on a Bank vault. Keep at .....totally worth it.

I did a google search on centralab wafer switch and it yielded several possibilities.

Sorry about your misfortune. I have made similar mistakes like that as well so I can relate. Like you say, live and learn. Maybe all is not lost. I saw a video where a guy found a wafer from a cb to fix the band switch for a ts-520.
